Technical section: block supports by SDB and SWZ
Adjustable block supports are a small but essential part of a display cabinet. This is where the shelves rest. At SDB, we manufacture them in collaboration with SWZ Care centres Kookkunst Tinks and Duinendaal.
The division of tasks is clear: we cut the block supports to size, anodise the aluminium (black, white or silver) and mill a threaded hole into them. Clients at the day care centres fit them with a screw at the correct depth and a black cap. The block supports are then ready for use.
A fun and meaningful activity
At Kookkunst Tinks, a few clients assemble block supports every day. At Duinendaal, an average of 13 clients work on the project, six of whom are for SDB. Together, they assemble thousands of units every week. “Without any pressure,” says Ans Bimbergen, a support worker at Kookkunst Tinks. “We don’t have to meet any minimum targets, so we can work on them whenever we like. That’s brilliant!”
The fact that these are repetitive tasks requiring fine motor skills makes the work enjoyable for the clients. But even more important is that they are helping others through it. “We really are making a difference,” says Duinendaal supervisor Roland van Galen. “That’s why we’re so pleased with this project. We adapt the tasks ourselves so that anyone who wants to can do them.”
“It’s no different here,” adds Ans. “For example, we have someone who can’t manage the bit with the screw at the start. So someone else does that. And for a client with only one hand, we’ve made a little holder. That way, it’s a fun and meaningful way for everyone to spend the day, and SDB gets help: a win-win!”
